Commercial Kitchen Supply Company Sees Opportunity In New Tech

Avondale Restaurant Equipment To Offer Mask/Thermal Screener

Avondale Restaurant Equipment out of Hamilton, ON, continues to expand its breadth in technology options for its customers, by offering Janus – a standalone temperature and mask detection monitor. Janus has been making headlines recently, with installations in the hospitality space and Avondale took note.

Avondale has pivoted to provide more PPE options and innovative technologies, such as Janus, to provide our customers options when doing business during and post pandemic,” says Kristy Barber, President at Avondale Restaurant Equipment LTD. “Needless to say, the industry has changed and Avondale strives to help our customers solve problems and we have continued to do so for our customers during these difficult times,” she adds.

The commercial kitchen equipment and supply company plans to offer Janus preconfigured with its customers branding and to instantly monitor body temperature and ‘welcome’ patrons into the establishment if temperature readings are below 37.3°C. That is the body temperature threshold outlined by the government of Canada’s public health guidelines, based off of World Health Organization (WHO) recommendations. If Janus detects a customer entering the restaurant, with a high temperature, the device will audibly ask the person to ‘please wait for assistance from a staff member’. At this point the process will be done again, leaving the final decision up to the staff member on whether to permit entrance or not.

Janus also features facial recognition technology that alerts for non-compliance of mask wearing requirements. If a mask is not present, or even if it is not positioned on the face properly, Janus will politely ask the customer to ‘please wear a mask’. If both requirements are met (temperature and mask), the system will display a big green checkmark and say ’welcome to {restaurant name}’.

“We see applications for Janus across our customer base, from restaurants to institutions to food production facilities,” says Barber. “Janus can alleviate staffing costs & repetitive tasks and offers a simple yet accurate and discreet way to ensure staff and other patrons are safe. What’s very exciting is that Janus is capable of doing much more and we are interested to work with our partners at Solution Into Motion, to unlock some of that potential in the future.”

Janus can be customized to a vast amount of different critical tasks from online reservation management, to staff time-logs, to door/entrance security configurations and much more. It can also be used in-house for accurate staff time logs. Janus has reporting capabilities to help managers/operators understand and analyze data about capacity, reservation trending, and more.

“So far the success of Janus has been largely in the hospitality sector, so this alliance with such an established player in that space is a no brainer for us,” says Conrad Galambos, President at Solutions Into Motion, the operator of Janus. “We want to work with Avondale closely to get feedback on how our dev team can prioritize new functionality for Janus in the food service world.”
